Most tyre manufacturers now produce a wear indicator bar moulded into the tyre. When the main tyre tread wears down to this bar at any point accross the tyre surface it needs to be replaced.
Tip - When checking your tyre wear, make sure you turn your steering wheel full lock to the right and then check the front right tyre and repeat for the left - it makes the job much easier.
It is not just tread wear that can end a tyres useful life, other defects such as side wall bulges or splitting can also be extremely dangerous. These can be caused by banging the the tyre up and down kerbs, pot holes or even clipping the corner of a kerb with the side of the tyre.
Tip - cleaning your car can be a very useful way of checking the tyres. Make sure you brush the actual tyre and take a good look at the tyres side walls, checking for bulges or cracks. Checking the inside edge is harder but at JGS Autos, we will happily check your tyres for you and advise you on the condition of your tyres.
Tyres can wear in odd ways which can impact the handling of the vehicle, so if you feel that the car is 'lighter on the road', 'sliding or spinning' the wheels more or even if the ride is 'rough', these may all be symptoms of abnormal or severe tyre wear.
Tip - if you experience any of these symptoms or have any concerns about how your vehicle is running, pop in or give us a call. We will be able to help even if it is merely to verify the vehicles safety and put your mind at ease.
